Don't look at the well-known cosplayers and hold yourself to those expectations. You're just starting out, so chances are you haven't honed your crafting/sewing/wig styling/etc... skills yet. If you have, awesome!!! If not, don't worry! You will learn and there are plenty of cosplayers, myself included, who are here to help you learn
It's about learning, building skill sets that you can use in life (you learn a lot from cosplay, not just how to make outfits), make friends, and have fun!
It isn't all about contests and it isn't about excluding anyone. Just because one person doesn't want to work with you does not mean that everyone else doesn't either. For every one rejection there are probably ten people who would LOVE to work with you
Also, do not go into cosplay wanting "fame." You'll only end up disappointed and want to not cosplay anymore. Do it for yourself because you love it. Bring characters to life because you love them. Heck you can do it for other people too if you want to see them smile because you're dressed as their favorite character! If you do something you love, good things will come from it.
